Where to stay near Zion

Checked

Springdale puts you inside walking distance and sells out months ahead. Everywhere else is cheaper and costs you the mornings. The real trade, priced.

Zion is unusual among big national parks: the gateway town is genuinely walkable to the entrance, and that single fact drives the whole lodging decision.

The four options, honestly

WhereDrive to the entranceWhat it costs youWhat it buys
SpringdaleWalk, or a free town shuttleThe most per night, and it sells outMornings. No parking, no entrance line, no driving after dinner
Hurricane / La Verkin~25 minutesThe drive, twice a day, plus parkingNoticeably cheaper rooms and actual grocery stores
Kanab~40 minutes, from the eastThe tunnel, in both directionsA base that also works for Bryce and the north rim
St George~1 hourTwo hours a dayThe airport, chain hotels, real restaurant choice

Why Springdale is worth paying for

Not the rooms. The mornings.

For most of the year you cannot drive into Zion Canyon — the shuttle is the only way in, and it starts at the Visitor Center. If you are staying outside town you drive in, find the lot full, park in Springdale anyway, and then join the shuttle line having already spent an hour.

Staying in Springdale, the car does not move all week. You walk or take the town shuttle to the pedestrian entrance, walk through, and you are at stop 1. That is the whole argument, and on a three-day trip it is worth more than the nightly difference.

The catch

There are about thirty places to stay in the entire town.

That is a remarkably small supply for a park that sees millions of visits a year, and it behaves exactly as you would expect: prices are high, the good properties go months ahead, and last-minute availability in spring and fall is close to nonexistent.

If you are inside two months of a spring or fall trip, check Springdale first and be ready to take Hurricane rather than hold out.

Zion Lodge, and the year-ahead problem

The only lodging inside the park, at shuttle stop 5. Being in the canyon before the first shuttle arrives from the Visitor Center is a genuinely different experience of the place.

It books roughly a year in advance, which means it is not a decision you make while planning a trip — it is a decision that determines when the trip happens.

What we earn

Booking a hotel through the links on this site pays us a small commission, at no cost to you. Zion Lodge is not on any platform we work with, so the one property we would tell you to plan a trip around is the one we make nothing from.

Saying so is cheaper than pretending otherwise, and it is the only reason to believe the rest of the page.

Questions people actually ask

Should you stay in Springdale or somewhere cheaper?

Springdale if you can get it at a rate you can live with. It is the only option where you can reach the park on foot and leave the car parked all week, which removes the entrance line and the parking problem entirely. Hurricane and La Verkin are meaningfully cheaper and cost you about 25 minutes each way plus the parking fight.

How far is Springdale from Zion National Park?

It borders it. The town runs right up to the pedestrian entrance, and a free town shuttle runs the length of the main street to it. From most Springdale hotels you are inside the park in under fifteen minutes without driving.

Can you stay inside Zion National Park?

Yes — Zion Lodge sits in the canyon itself, at shuttle stop 5. It is the only lodging inside the park and it books out roughly a year ahead. If your dates are flexible and you want to be in the canyon at dawn without a shuttle, it is the one property worth planning a trip around.

Is St George a reasonable base for Zion?

It is about an hour each way, which makes it a poor base for hiking and a reasonable one if Zion is a single day inside a wider Utah trip. It has the airport, the chain hotels and the real restaurant choice, and you will spend two hours a day driving.
