Where to stay near Zion: Springdale, Hurricane, Kanab, Lodge

Zion is unusual among big national parks: the gateway town is genuinely walkable to the entrance, and that single fact drives the whole lodging decision.

Why Springdale is worth paying for

Not the rooms. The mornings.

For most of the year you cannot drive into Zion Canyon — the shuttle is the only way in, and it starts at the Visitor Center. If you are staying outside town you drive in, find the lot full, park in Springdale anyway, and then join the shuttle line having already spent an hour.

Staying in Springdale, the car does not move all week. You walk or take the town shuttle to the pedestrian entrance, walk through, and you are at stop 1. That is the whole argument, and on a three-day trip it is worth more than the nightly difference. The town shuttle’s hours and the park shuttle’s first and last buses are in the Zion shuttle guide.

Staying further out and driving in is the other way round: the park’s own summer guidance is that its lots are often full by 9 a.m., after which you park in Springdale at $15 to $25 a day and take the town shuttle anyway. The parking page has the zones.

The catch

Springdale is one main street. The town is hemmed in by the canyon walls on both sides, so the supply of rooms cannot grow to meet a park that sees millions of visits a year, and the market behaves exactly as you would expect: prices are high, the good properties go months ahead, and last-minute availability in spring and fall is close to nonexistent.

If you are inside two months of a spring or fall trip, check Springdale first and be ready to take Hurricane rather than hold out. Kanab is the east-side equivalent, and the base to look at if Bryce is on the same trip: Zion and Bryce on one trip has the drive times, the tunnel and Mount Carmel Junction. A rockfall closed the tunnel road to through traffic from 30 September to 9 October 2026, and whenever it is shut, Kanab is about two hours from Zion Canyon by Fredonia, Hildale and Hurricane — so for the canyon, Hurricane is the fallback, not Kanab.

For a group or a family, a whole house in Hurricane or Kanab can beat two or three rooms. Hurricane’s houses, cabins and apartments are on Vrbo’s list for the town, linked above beside Booking.com’s; Kanab’s are mostly houses, and its Vrbo list is linked above too.

Within Springdale, the hotel’s stop on the free town shuttle matters more than the hotel: Springdale hotels by shuttle stop maps every one the town names to its stop, with the walk to the park from 5 to 55 minutes.

Zion Lodge, and the year-ahead problem

The only lodging inside the park, at shuttle stop 5. Being in the canyon before the first shuttle arrives from the Visitor Center is a genuinely different experience of the place.

Its rooms open 12 months ahead by the Lodge’s policy page and 13 by its FAQ, a month at a time, which means it is not a decision you make while planning a trip; it is a decision that determines when the trip happens. Rooms, cabins, the gate code and what it does not do are on the Zion Lodge page.

Booking it

A short street of hotels with a national park at the end of it means spring and fall weekends book out months ahead, and the walkable places go first. If your dates are fixed, book the room before you book anything else.

Zion Lodge, the only lodging inside the park, is on Booking.com, linked above; on 27 October 2026 it had rooms there through the night of 28 February 2027 and none from 1 March.
